A regional Caribbean retail bank runs its card payments on a long-established COBOL switch. Reliable for decades, but opaque, hard to extend, and increasingly stretched by the tourist-season surges its original designers never planned for.

The Challenge

International card traffic spiked three to four times over during the tourist season, exactly when downtime was least affordable. The bank had no real-time view of switch health, its POS and ATM estate was a patchwork of custom integrations, and the handful of people who understood the core were nearing retirement. Leadership wanted modern visibility and headroom, but a full switch replacement was an unacceptable risk to live payments.

What We Did

We left the COBOL core exactly as it was. Around it, we built an API layer to expose live transaction data, real-time dashboards for operations and finance, and continuous health monitoring with early-warning alerts ahead of seasonal peaks. We standardised the POS and ATM integrations, documented the undocumented, and load-tested capacity so the team could enter peak season with evidence rather than hope.
